I use Bryce 5 and a combination of different lighting effects/textures. I don't think it's really anything -I- do though, I think its more Bryce's skill at rendering stuff that looks like that.

this was done in bryce5, with two radial lights and a torus and two cones. i moved the camera view to only see the sky.

thanks for the comment on "your inner soul". Basically, the piece was just a torus knot with 5 twists, noised, bend, meshsmooh, noise, bend, taper, twists, meshsmooth again...thats basically how I do all of my pieces.
